I get this question a lot when I get to someone’s door: “What does a State Representative do?” The state legislature votes on a lot of things that have influence over your life: HEALTH CARE The state legislature regulates health care - remember that Obamacare started here in Massachusetts as Romneycare! Everything from access to quality to cost to mental health parity can be improved by the legislature. With Steward Health Care going bankrupt and closing hospitals, it is clear that private equity investors have too much influence over our health care, and as a physician I bring a unique perspective that I am eager to put to work for YOU, which begins with putting patients over profits. |

HOUSING The state plays a leading role in housing, such as passing the MBTA Communities Law, which required cities and towns to zone for more density near transit stops, and the new Affordable Homes Act. As your Rep. I will fight for increases in the MRVP which helps close the gap for those who can pay something for housing but need help affording market rate rents, and the AHVP to help those with disabilities better access housing. EDUCATION The state legislature plays a huge role in education! The legislature determines how much money to send to local school districts every year, and it determines accountability standards. The legislature decides how much aid to allot to our public colleges and universities, thereby affecting tuition rates. As the only candidate in this race with a child currently in the Newton Public Schools, as the only candidate with a Bachelor's degree, law degree and medical degree, I will always be a strong voice for education! TRANSPORTATION The state legislature determines how much money goes to roads, bridges, and public transportation. As the only candidate who commutes via Green Line every day, I am very familiar with the failings of our public transportation system, and I am eager to get to work fighting for more money to go upgrading safety and increasing frequency of the MBTA. |

CLIMATE CHANGE The state legislature has passed several ambitious bills requiring that we reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, move to solar and wind and away from fossil fuels, creating incentives to switch to electric vehicles, and more. As a Councilor I protected Webster Woods, and as a physician I can tell you public health is closely linked to environmental health. I will fight for faster progress toward reaching our climate goals. And I could list so many more issues that are regulated at the state level that affect you - from housing to gun regulation to reproductive health equity to voting rights and more. I will be a progressive, pragmatic, solutions-oriented advocate for the values our community holds dear. CONSTITUENT SERVICES State Representatives perform a lot of constituent services - everything from potholes on state roads, to helping people navigate state government: the RMV, MassDOT, Mass Health, the unemployment office, as well as accessing services: mental health, referrals to legal aid, and assistance with housing, just to name a few. As a primary care physician for 25 years, and as a former Congressional aide who helped constituents access everything from social security benefits to faster passports, I have spent most of my life helping solve people’s problems, and it will be my highest priority to make state government work for you. |
